Makinde Urges Christians to Engage in Politics, Says Poverty Is Nigeria’s Biggest Problem
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged Christians across Nigeria to participate more actively in politics, warning that withdrawing from political engagement because of religious beliefs or the perception that politics is a dirty game could limit their influence on governance.
Makinde made the appeal on Saturday in Abuja after receiving a Christian Icon Award at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
The governor encouraged Christians to draw lessons from biblical figures who accepted positions of responsibility despite challenging circumstances. He cited David, who served in King Saul’s palace despite knowing he had been anointed to become king, as an example of why Christians should not shy away from public service.
Makinde argued that Nigeria’s most pressing challenge was not religion but widespread poverty. He said national attention should focus on addressing the economic hardship facing citizens rather than allowing religious differences to dominate public discourse.
He urged Christians to contribute to efforts to rebuild the country and improve the welfare of Nigerians, stressing that national development requires active participation in the political process.
