2027: Kano Governor Pledges Northern Support for Tinubu’s Re-election
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf says Kano will lead efforts to mobilise Northern support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, as the Arewa for Asiwaju movement opens its campaign office in Abuja.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid across Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yusuf made the pledge on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Abuja during the inauguration of the Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A) campaign office, where he said Kano would play a leading role in the mobilisation effort.
In a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor said the movement would coordinate political engagement and support for Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the region.
“I can guarantee the President that the North will support his second-term ambition,” Yusuf said.
He added that Kano, which has one of the largest voting populations in Northern Nigeria, would be central to the campaign’s mobilisation efforts.
“Kano, as the state with the highest number of votes in Northern Nigeria, would, in sha Allah, lead all Nigerian states to secure victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a massive turnout in favour of the APC,” the governor said.
The event was attended by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who said political support should be accompanied by accountability, effective governance and measurable improvements in citizens’ lives.
Shettima acknowledged the economic challenges facing Nigerians and stressed the need for the administration to address public concerns while prioritising security, education, poverty reduction and economic opportunities.
The Arewa for Asiwaju movement is intended to coordinate support for Tinubu and Shettima across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Minister of Defence Badaru Abubakar is serving as the movement’s national coordinator.
The inauguration marks another step in efforts by supporters of the APC-led administration to organise political mobilisation ahead of the next general elections. However, the governor’s pledge represents the position of the campaign movement and does not establish how voters across Northern Nigeria will ultimately vote.
