'Colours of Fire' Heads to Netflix Following AMVCA Wins for Uzor Arukwe

"Colours of Fire," the fantasy epic from director Niyi Akinmolayan, arrives on Netflix on August 7, 2026, months after its December 2025 cinema release drew mixed box-office returns despite its ambitious scale and visual effects.

The film follows Akinbode, a warrior from the dominant Blue tribe sent to slay a creature believed to originate from the rival Red tribe, whose path toward Moremi exposes inherited hatred, propaganda and the myths that keep the two communities apart. Uzor Arukwe leads as Akinbode opposite Osas Ighodaro as Moremi, with Gabriel Afolayan, Mercy Aigbe, Femi Branch and Ibrahim Chatta rounding out the cast.

The film earned three wins at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards in May, including Best Lead Actor for Arukwe, alongside honours for costume design and art direction — recognition that renewed interest in the title even after its theatrical run had wrapped.

Akinmolayan, who also wrote the film, has described the project as the start of what he calls "Afrofusion cinema" — a blend of African mythology, pan-African cultural influences and homegrown visual effects work.

Its Netflix debut gives "Colours of Fire" a second chance to find the audience its cinema run underperformed with, joining a growing slate of Nollywood titles using streaming to extend their reach beyond opening weekend.
