Tinubu Approves Lifetime Salaries for Retired Immigration Chiefs, Tunji-Ojo Says
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo says President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salary payments for retired immigration chiefs, while highlighting changes to promotions, recruitment and personnel welfare under the administration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salary payments for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
Tunji-Ojo made the disclosure on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) training at the Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja.
The minister also credited the Tinubu administration with clearing promotion backlogs across services under the Ministry of Interior, saying at least 50,000 personnel had attained new ranks and positions within three years.
According to him, the government had also increased recruitment, improved salaries and introduced or adjusted allowances for personnel.
“It has never happened before, but Tinubu did it. He also increased the volume of recruitment, where we now have no fewer than 40,000 new recruits at once,” the minister said.
He added that the President had addressed salary increases and allowances, including hazard and peculiar allowances.
Tunji-Ojo further praised the administration for what he described as improvements in the welfare of serving and retired personnel. He said retired Comptrollers-General had previously received pensions of about ₦130,000, which he described as inadequate.
“Previously, CGs had a pension of about ₦130,000, it was not encouraging. But what did the president do? He signed, and approved salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” he said.
The minister did not provide further details in the remarks reported, including the formal terms of the approval, its implementation date or the number of retired officers expected to benefit.
Tunji-Ojo also described Tinubu’s policies as investments intended to strengthen public institutions over the long term.
He said the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda was focused on building systems that would continue to function beyond the President’s tenure.
“President Bola Tinubu has never been about the immediate, but the future. He understands that the most prosperous nations do not boil, cook, and eat their seeds, they plant them,” he said.
The minister added that public institutions should be built to serve future generations, stressing that the lasting impact of government policies would be reflected in what was handed down to those who came after the current administration.
