Ondo Signs MoU for Five Electric Buses, Charging Stations in Akure
Ondo State has signed an MoU with ADMINSERV Limited for a five-bus electric transport pilot in Akure, with charging stations planned at selected bus stops and projected savings for commuters.
The Ondo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with technology company ADMINSERV Limited to introduce electric buses and charging infrastructure as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs and improve public mobility.
The pilot phase will begin with five electric buses operating in Akure, the state capital, alongside the installation of charging stations at selected bus stops. The initiative is expected to expand to other parts of the state if implemented as planned.
The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed this on Monday, October 19, 2026, after the agreement was signed in Akure.
According to reports on the agreement, the five buses are valued at ₦180 million each, bringing the proposed initial fleet investment to ₦900 million.
Ogunyemi said the initiative was designed to ease the burden of rising transportation costs while providing charging infrastructure for other electric vehicle owners.
He explained that the charging stations would not be restricted to buses operated under the scheme but would also be accessible to individuals and organisations using electric vehicles.
“This is the first time that this is happening in Ondo State. They want to use those bus stops as charging points for electric vehicles. This would reduce the cost of transportation drastically,” Ogunyemi said.
The transport adviser added that the government intended to extend the facilities to other local government areas, while pursuing electric mobility alongside compressed natural gas (CNG) as alternative energy sources for transportation.
He said CNG infrastructure was also being developed at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and in Ore to improve access to alternative fuel options across the state's three senatorial districts.
The Managing Director of ADMINSERV Limited, Peter Nnamani, said the company, established in 2025, was developing technology-driven transportation solutions, including an artificial intelligence-enabled application to support the proposed service.
Nnamani said the planned electric bus system would seek to address transportation costs, punctuality, environmental pollution and security through digital monitoring and improved fleet management.
He projected that monthly transportation spending could fall from approximately ₦9,000 to between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000 per user under the proposed system.
However, the projected savings will depend on the service's fares, routes, operating arrangements and eventual implementation.
Nnamani added that the proposed application would enable the monitoring of buses and drivers, while the project was expected to generate employment through the installation and management of charging facilities and the recruitment of bus drivers.
The initiative forms part of Ondo State's broader efforts to explore alternative-energy transportation and improve the affordability and efficiency of public transport. The timing of the service launch and the extent of its eventual expansion will depend on implementation of the agreement.
