NDLEA Arraigns Two Suspected Drug Kingpins Over Enugu Meth Lab
The NDLEA has arraigned two suspected members of a Nigerian-Mexican drug network over an alleged methamphetamine laboratory uncovered in Enugu State.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arraigned two suspected members of a Nigerian-Mexican drug trafficking network accused of operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The suspects, 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, alias Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were arrested following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance, according to the NDLEA.
The agency's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the development in a statement on Thursday.
Babafemi said the suspects allegedly operated the laboratory in collaboration with Rodriguez Villanueva, whom the agency identified as an alleged member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.
Christopher and Monday were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division, on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine.
The two suspects pleaded to the charges. Following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing, the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial.
Three other people named in the charge — Uchenna, alias Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Rodriguez Villanueva — remain at large, according to the agency.
The NDLEA said investigations by its Special Operations Unit uncovered what it described as a sophisticated transnational operation involving Nigerian and Mexican nationals.
According to Babafemi, surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Christopher's movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states before investigators traced him to a compound in Obeagu.
NDLEA operatives subsequently discovered a clandestine laboratory which the agency said was equipped for the production of methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
The laboratory contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment similar to facilities previously dismantled by the agency in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of large quantities of chemicals that the NDLEA identified as precursor substances and materials used in methamphetamine production.
They included 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid, among other substances.
The NDLEA said the quantity and combination of the chemicals were consistent with what it described as a high-potency P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
A related search at Monday's family residence also led to the recovery of eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine, according to the agency.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Buba Marwa commended the officers involved in the investigation and arrests.
Marwa said the operation demonstrated the agency's efforts to disrupt transnational drug trafficking networks and prevent Nigeria from being used as a base for illicit drug production.
He said the NDLEA would continue to rely on intelligence-led operations and international cooperation to identify and dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within the country.
The case will return to court on October 21, 2026, for trial.
The allegations against the two defendants have not been established by the court.
