FG Increases NYSC Feeding Budget, Implementation Begins in 2027
NYSC Director-General Olakunle Nafiu says the Budget Office has been notified of the revised allocation, although the new amount has not been disclosed.
The Federal Government has approved an increase in the budget for feeding members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation programme, with the revised allocation expected to take effect in 2027.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while interacting with members of the 2026 Batch C, Stream One at the Cross River State Orientation Camp in Obubra.
Nafiu said the Budget Office had been informed of the upward review, which is intended to improve the welfare of corps members during their orientation exercise.
However, the NYSC has not disclosed the new allocation, the percentage increase or how much additional funding will be available for meals.
NYSC DG Advises Corps Members on Financial Discipline
Beyond the feeding budget announcement, Nafiu urged corps members to manage their finances responsibly, avoid unnecessary spending and develop a savings culture.
He encouraged them to use their service year to acquire practical and vocational skills that could improve their employment prospects and provide opportunities for self-employment after completing national service.
He specifically mentioned cosmetology, traditional hairstyling and other vocational activities as skills that could help corps members build additional sources of income.
Corps Members Warned About Travel Safety
Nafiu also cautioned corps members against exposing themselves to unnecessary risks while travelling.
He advised those still on the road as evening approached to stop their journeys before 6 p.m. and continue the following day where necessary.
He further warned against sleeping in public places or gathering in large numbers at filling stations, noting that such practices could expose travellers to security threats.
The NYSC chief advised corps members who needed assistance to seek refuge at military barracks, police stations or Department of State Services facilities and contact the scheme through its official communication channels.
NYSC Promises Improvements at Obubra Camp
Nafiu said the scheme would intensify engagement with relevant stakeholders to improve and rehabilitate facilities at the Obubra orientation camp.
Earlier, the Cross River State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Adejoke Oyenuga, disclosed that 1,064 corps members had registered for the 2026 Batch C, Stream One orientation exercise.
Oyenuga said the participants had adapted to the camp environment and described the director-general’s visit as an encouragement to corps members and camp officials.
The proposed feeding-budget increase is part of the government’s efforts to improve conditions during orientation. Its practical impact will depend on the final allocation, implementation and effective use of the additional funding.
