FATE Foundation, Google Launch Programme to Train 30,000 African AI Students
Nigeria targets nearly 12,000 of the trainees across 10 universities under the new Africa AI Upskilling Programme

FATE Foundation officially launched the Africa AI Upskilling Programme on August 10, 2026 at the University of Lagos, in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and support from Google. The initiative aims to train 30,000 STEM students across four African countries in advanced artificial intelligence skills, with Nigeria carrying the largest share of the target at 11,836 students spread across 10 universities.
The Nigerian rollout will train 50 university lecturers as "AI Champions" and 50 teaching assistants, part of a broader pool of more than 292 instructors being prepared to deliver the curriculum nationwide. The programme blends a curriculum developed with Google DeepMind with pedagogical methods from University College London, delivered through a hybrid model of online coursework and in-person instruction so that lecturers can localise the material for their own students.
Beyond Nigeria, the programme extends to Kenya, South Africa and Ghana, part of a wider goal of shifting Africa from a continent that primarily consumes AI tools to one that produces them. As Google's Matita Arize put it at the launch, the continent needs "AI creators, model architects, researchers, and tech founders" rather than users alone. FATE Foundation's Ayomide Akindolie-Igwe and other organisers framed the initiative as a direct response to the shortage of advanced AI talent across African universities.
The launch lands amid a broader wave of AI-focused investment in Nigerian higher education, coming roughly three weeks ahead of GITEX Nigeria 2026, where AI skills and sovereign AI infrastructure are also set to dominate the agenda. Officials involved in the programme say the emphasis on training lecturers first, rather than only students, is intended to make the skills transfer self-sustaining long after the initial cohort graduates.
