Super Falcons Thrash Comoros 5–0, Set Up Morocco Clash in Olympic Qualifiers
Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu score twice each as Nigeria secure a 7–0 aggregate victory, although captain Rasheedat Ajibade suffers an injury setback.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a place in the third round of the 2028 Olympic women’s football qualifiers after defeating Comoros 5–0 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Tuesday.
The victory completed a 7–0 aggregate triumph for the 10-time African champions, who entered the second leg with a 2–0 advantage from the opening encounter.
Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored twice each, while Christy Ucheibe converted a penalty to seal Nigeria’s emphatic victory and set up a third-round meeting with Morocco.
Payne and Kanu Shine in Five-Goal Victory
Nigeria dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities but had to wait until the 41st minute to break the deadlock.
Kanu capitalised on a defensive error by the Comoros goalkeeper before setting up Payne, who finished to give the Super Falcons a 1–0 lead at half-time.
The hosts increased their advantage in the second half when Kanu headed home a cross from substitute Folashade Ijamilusi in the 58th minute.
Payne completed her brace in the 63rd minute after connecting with a delivery from Blessing Okpe, putting Nigeria three goals ahead.
Three minutes later, Kanu scored her second goal with another header, extending Nigeria’s lead to 4–0.
Ucheibe completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute after Okpe was brought down inside the box.
The result gave Nigeria a comfortable 7–0 aggregate victory following their 2–0 first-leg win.
Ajibade Suffers Injury Setback
Despite the convincing performance, the Super Falcons suffered an injury setback when captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off in the first half.
Ajibade sustained the injury following a collision with a Comoros defender in the 23rd minute and was replaced by Folashade Ijamilusi.
Speaking after the match, interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen said the medical team had arranged further examinations to determine the extent of the injury.
The coach expressed hope that the injury would not be serious but said an official update would follow the medical assessment.
Ijamilusi made an immediate contribution after coming on, providing attacking support and creating opportunities for her teammates.
Fellow substitute Blessing Okpe also impressed, contributing to Nigeria’s attacking play and winning the penalty that produced the fifth goal.
Super Falcons to Face Morocco in Third Round
The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to Morocco in the third round of the African qualifying series for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The two-legged encounter is expected to take place during the February–March 2027 international window.
Nigeria will be seeking to maintain their momentum against the North African side as they continue their campaign for a place at the Olympics.
For Eguavoen and his technical team, the immediate priority will be assessing Ajibade’s fitness while preparing the squad for the next stage of qualification.
