Rooney Denies Carroll’s Claims of Drinking and Smoking on England Duty

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has denied claims by ex-teammate Andy Carroll that he drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes while the pair were on international duty, describing the account as a “fabrication.”

The allegation appears in Carroll’s new autobiography, Owning It, in which the former England striker recalls informal gatherings during national-team camps around 2010 and 2011.

According to Carroll’s account, Rooney would invite teammates to his hotel room, where beer, wine and cigarettes were reportedly available. Carroll portrayed the gatherings as an attempt to break the monotony of long England camps rather than as wild parties.

Rooney has rejected the claim. He said he rarely responds to what he considers false reports about him but felt compelled to address Carroll’s account. Rooney also disputed the suggestion that the two were close socially, saying they had never really spent time together outside football.

Carroll has reportedly stood by his version of events. A friend of the former striker said Carroll was “beyond baffled” by Rooney’s denial and maintained that the account reflected his honest recollection. The friend also said the autobiography had undergone standard editorial and legal checks before publication.

The disagreement has left the details of the alleged incident unresolved. Carroll’s account has not been independently verified, while Rooney continues to deny that it happened as described.
