Rivers APC Backs Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Despite Pressure
Rivers APC has reaffirmed its support for Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition despite the APC Governors’ Forum’s opposition to alliances that could weaken the party.
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed its support for the Rainbow Coalition associated with former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The position follows the APC Governors’ Forum’s recent rejection of political alliances that could weaken the party or undermine its candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
Despite the forum’s position, the Rivers APC leadership maintained that political strategies should reflect the realities of individual states and should not be applied uniformly across the country.
The Rivers chapter described the Rainbow Coalition as a platform focused primarily on mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu while allowing participating political parties to pursue their interests in other elections.
Wike has also maintained that the coalition is not an APC structure and does not prevent political parties from presenting candidates for governorship and legislative contests.
The Rivers APC leadership said it remained comfortable with the arrangement and credited the political strategy with contributing to support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election. It also reaffirmed its commitment to the coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development highlights the differing approaches within the APC and among its allies as political parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
