Obi Not Godfather To Any Of Soludo's Children — First Lady's Aide

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi is not the godfather of any of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s children, the media aide to Anambra First Lady Nonye Soludo, Daniel Ezeigwe, has clarified.

Ezeigwe issued the clarification on Saturday, September 26, 2026, following the circulation of a video in which Obi said he and his wife, Margaret, were godparents to Soludo’s children.

Obi made the remark on Friday while speaking at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu, where he discussed his relationship with Soludo despite their political differences.

“People might not know, my wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close. So we are not quarrelling, and we will never quarrel,” Obi said.

However, Ezeigwe said the actual godparent relationship between the two families was different.

According to the statement, Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to one of Obi’s daughters, while Margaret Obi is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.

“Mr Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr Nonye Soludo,” the statement said.

It added that neither Obi nor Soludo had served as a godparent to the other’s children.

The First Lady’s aide said it was possible that Obi had misspoken while making his remarks but explained that the widespread circulation of the video and enquiries from members of the public made it necessary to clarify the relationship.

“The relationship between the two families is cordial and there is no need to misrepresent it in any manner,” the statement said.

The clarification came amid renewed attention to the relationship between Obi and Soludo, who have had political disagreements despite their longstanding personal and family connections.

At the Guild of Editors conference, Obi maintained that there was no personal quarrel between him and Soludo and said their political differences had not affected their personal relationship.

The former governor said that if he encountered Soludo, they would embrace, while stressing that he would respond to political criticisms when necessary.

The First Lady’s office urged members of the public and the media to take note of the clarification and disregard any impression that Peter Obi is the godfather of any of Governor Soludo’s children.
