National Assembly Passes Revised ₦68.3 Trillion 2026 Budget

Nigeria's National Assembly has passed a revised 2026 Appropriation Bill totalling ₦68.323 trillion, raising the budget by more than ₦9.09 trillion from the ₦58.47 trillion initially proposed by the executive.

Lawmakers directed the bulk of the new spending toward capital projects, which now account for roughly ₦32.287 trillion, about 47 percent of the total budget, reflecting the government's stated priority of infrastructure-led growth. The revised budget also carries ₦5.71 trillion earmarked to settle legacy debt obligations carried over from the 2025 fiscal year.

Health received ₦482.758 billion in the new appropriation, while the judiciary was allocated ₦268 billion, including ₦36 billion for the Supreme Court, an allocation lawmakers said was intended to shore up the judiciary's operational capacity. The Ministry of Finance Incorporated was allocated ₦478.6 billion.

The budget also set aside ₦8.96 billion for feasibility studies on two major road corridors, Calabar-Maiduguri and Maiduguri-Sokoto, part of a wider push to expand federal highway coverage across the country's northern and eastern regions.

To give ministries, departments and agencies more room to complete outstanding work, the National Assembly extended the implementation deadline for the 2025 capital budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, a move intended to reduce the number of stalled or partially funded projects carried into the new fiscal year.
