Manchester United Make Champions League Return With Emphatic Win

Manchester United marked their return to the UEFA Champions League with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday.

United, appearing in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time in three seasons, produced a dominant performance to begin their league-phase campaign with three points.

Sabah started brightly and frustrated United during the opening stages, but the hosts eventually found a breakthrough in the 27th minute.

Patrick Dorgu delivered a dangerous cross from the left, and Matheus Cunha reacted quickly to fire United into the lead.

The visitors had an opportunity to level when Joy-Lance Mickels found himself unmarked near goal, but he failed to convert the chance.

United took advantage of the reprieve late in the first half. Bruno Fernandes doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute before Benjamin Šeško scored two minutes later to give Michael Carrick’s side a commanding 3-0 lead at the interval.

Šeško’s goal was particularly significant as the striker continued his impressive run after scoring as a substitute in United’s Premier League draw with Everton.

United controlled the game after the restart and Carrick made several substitutions as he managed his squad with Sunday’s Manchester derby against Manchester City also on the horizon.

Lisandro Martínez completed the scoring in the 68th minute after Joshua Zirkzee’s clever play created confusion inside the Sabah defence. Martínez reacted quickest to finish from close range and make it 4-0.

The result gave United a perfect start to their Champions League league-phase campaign and provided a much-needed boost after an inconsistent opening to their Premier League season.

Speaking after the match, Carrick praised his players for their performance and the contribution of both the starters and substitutes.

“I think it was kind of what we set out to achieve, good performance, individually and collectively throughout the game, the boys that started, the boys that came on pitch, clean sheet, goals, exciting football. A good night all round.”
