Makinde Promises One-Term Presidency, Challenges Tinubu Over Fuel Prices
The APM presidential candidate pledges a four-year government of national unity and demands transparency in how the Federal Government determines petrol prices.
Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to serve a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, promising to establish an inclusive transitional government of national unity.
Makinde also challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to publish its petroleum pricing template, arguing that Nigerians deserve to understand how fuel prices are determined amid rising living costs.
He made the commitments on Saturday, October 10, 2026, while addressing participants at the APM North-East town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State.
Makinde Demands Transparency in Fuel Pricing
The governor called on the Federal Government to make public the calculations and criteria used to determine petroleum product prices, saying Nigerians should be able to examine the figures and contribute ideas towards addressing the country’s economic challenges.
“We are asking for only two things. We do not want too much grammar; we just want relief for Nigerians,” Makinde said, urging the government to disclose how it arrived at prevailing fuel prices.
He questioned the effectiveness of some policies introduced by the Tinubu administration, including initiatives involving compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude arrangement.
Makinde also criticised the government’s handling of electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s earlier promise to improve power generation and supply within four years.
The APM candidate argued that holding public office did not give government officials exclusive access to the knowledge required to solve Nigeria’s problems. He called for greater public participation in policymaking and more transparency in decisions affecting citizens.
His demand came as the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited pursued temporary measures intended to ease the burden of high petrol prices. NNPC had announced an extension of its petrol discount at its retail outlets through October 31, 2026. The company said the measure was temporary relief and did not amount to a restoration of fuel subsidy.
Makinde Pledges Four-Year Government of National Unity
On his presidential ambition, Makinde promised that an administration led by him would not remain in office beyond four years if elected in 2027.
He described the proposed administration as a transitional government of national unity, saying it would promote inclusion and prevent any section of the country from dominating governance.
Makinde said his administration would seek contributions from Nigerians across the six geopolitical zones and involve citizens in developing solutions to challenges such as insecurity, poverty and economic hardship.
He presented the proposed government as an opportunity to change the country’s political direction and adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach to leadership.
APM Says Manifesto Will Follow Stakeholder Consultations
Makinde also explained that the party had deliberately delayed publishing its manifesto to allow consultations with stakeholders before finalising its policy proposals.
He said the consultations were intended to ensure that the party’s programme reflected concerns and ideas from different parts of the country.
The governor called for a different approach to politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that Nigerians needed honesty, accountability and practical responses to the country’s challenges.
His pledges form part of the APM’s emerging campaign message as the party prepares to contest the 2027 presidential election.
