Jorge Jesus Declines Further Comment on Ronaldo Dispute
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus says he has read Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement but will not engage further in the dispute, choosing instead to focus on the national team.
Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has declined to make further public comments on his dispute with Cristiano Ronaldo after reading the forward’s detailed account of what led to his departure from the national team camp.
Jesus was approached by journalists on Wednesday morning as he left his home for the Portuguese Football Federation headquarters. He confirmed that he had read Ronaldo’s statement but said he would now concentrate on his responsibilities with the national team.
“I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I’m going to the Federation to work, to think about the Portuguese national team,” Jesus said.
The coach did not respond point-by-point to Ronaldo’s allegations, effectively choosing not to prolong the public dispute.
Ronaldo's Account
Ronaldo, Portugal’s captain, released a lengthy statement on Tuesday explaining why he left the team’s training camp before the Nations League match against Denmark.
The 41-year-old accused Jesus of breaking his word twice.
Ronaldo said Jesus initially agreed to a plan for managing his playing time before subsequently asking him to prepare to play 30 minutes against Norway. Ronaldo said he warmed up for the match but was ultimately not brought on.
He described the incident as the first breach of trust.
Ronaldo then said a subsequent meeting involving Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho resulted in an understanding that Jesus would clarify the circumstances at a press conference.
According to Ronaldo, an eight-point document outlining the agreed explanation was prepared and validated. He said Jesus’ subsequent comments did not reflect that agreement, which he described as the second broken promise.
Jesus had previously disputed Ronaldo’s account of the agreement, while saying the forward remained eligible to return to the national team.
Ronaldo's International Future Remains Open
Despite the dispute, Ronaldo has not retired from international football.
In his statement, he said he remained available to represent Portugal after serving any disciplinary punishment and that his priority was to compete for the national team rather than simply return for a ceremonial farewell.
Jesus has likewise previously indicated that Ronaldo could return to the squad if he wanted to.
For now, however, Jesus appears determined to move the controversy out of the public spotlight and focus on his work with Portugal.
