FG Commissions New Power Substations to Boost Lagos Grid

The Federal Government has commissioned two major power transmission projects in Lagos, adding more than 200 megawatts of bulk capacity to a grid that has long struggled to meet the commercial hub's demand.

Minister of Power Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, representing President Bola Tinubu, commissioned the projects on August 17, 2026: a new Gas Insulated Substation at Apapa Road and an upgraded transmission substation at Ijora.

The Apapa GIS Substation, a 2x60MVA, 132/33kV facility, replaces an ageing installation that had been in service since 1985 and adds roughly 96 megawatts of bulk power capacity to the area. It was delivered with support from Japan's Official Development Assistance programme.

At Ijora, two new 100MVA, 132/33kV transformers raised the substation's capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, equivalent to about 184 megawatts, an increase of some 112 megawatts. The upgraded facility is expected to improve supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and surrounding communities that have historically dealt with unreliable power.

Tegbe said reliable electricity “is central to” Tinubu's ambition of growing Nigeria into a one-trillion-dollar economy, framing the commissioning as part of a wider effort to strengthen the national transmission network and support industrial competitiveness in Lagos.
