APC Governors Reject Alliances That Could Undermine Party Candidates in 2027

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected political alliances or arrangements that could weaken the party or undermine its candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The position was announced on Monday night by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Hope Uzodimma, after a closed-door meeting of APC governors at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

Uzodimma said the governors had not entered into any formal agreement with individuals or opposition parties and would not support political arrangements capable of creating divided loyalty within the APC.

According to him, the governors’ campaign commitment would remain focused on candidates officially sponsored by the APC at all levels.

He said the forum would not participate in, support or endorse any alliance capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any of the party’s candidates.

“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.

He added that the governors’ campaign structure would align with the objectives of the APC and the political direction of the President.

The declaration comes amid political activity surrounding the “Rainbow Coalition,” a movement associated with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The coalition brings together politicians from different political parties and has been promoted as a platform for supporting President Tinubu’s re-election.

Wike, who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party while serving in the APC-led Federal Government, has argued that politicians do not necessarily have to defect to the APC before supporting Tinubu.

The APC governors’ position, however, draws a distinction between support for the President and support for candidates contesting under the APC platform in other elections.

The issue has generated political debate in several states, including Rivers, where politicians from different parties have been associated with the Rainbow Coalition.

In July, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara publicly expressed support for the coalition, endorsed Tinubu for a second term and backed Kingsley Chinda as his preferred candidate for the Rivers governorship contest.

Wike had previously said that the coalition would collectively determine its preferred governorship candidate in Rivers State.

The latest position by the APC Governors Forum could intensify disagreements over whether politicians can support Tinubu’s presidential bid while backing candidates from other parties in governorship, senatorial and House of Representatives elections.

As political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections, the governors’ declaration signals their intention to maintain the APC’s official structure and campaign machinery across the different levels of the elections.
